How to compress images and videos for free, without uploading them
To make a file smaller, drop it on the File compressor and pick a level: Smallest, Balanced or Best quality. Videos come out as H.264 MP4s, pictures stay JPG, PNG or WebP, and songs become MP3s. Every row shows the size before and after. Everything happens on your own device, in the browser, so nothing is uploaded, and it is free, with no account and no watermark.
How do I compress a video to send or post?
- Open the File compressor.
- Drop the video (MP4, MOV, WebM or MKV), or press Choose files.
- Pick a level:
- Smallest: 720p at a low bitrate. Small enough for most email and chat limits.
- Balanced: up to 1080p. Good for Instagram, TikTok and YouTube Shorts.
- Best quality: the original size, encoded again at a high quality.
- Press the download button on the row, or Download all for a zip.
A minute of 1080p phone video is often 100 to 200 MB, because phones record at a high bitrate to be safe. Encoding it again at Balanced usually makes it several times smaller with no difference you'd notice on a phone screen. The sound is kept as AAC.
The compressor uses your computer's own video encoder, so the speed depends on your machine. A long video takes a while: keep the tab open until the row shows its new size.
How do I compress a JPG or PNG?
Drop the pictures and pick a level. A JPG or WebP is saved again at a lower quality; at Smallest and Balanced, a picture bigger than 1600 or 2560 pixels on its longest side is also shrunk to fit. That alone often takes a 12-megapixel photo from 5 MB to a few hundred kB.
A PNG is lossless, so saving it again at the same size changes little. When a file can't get any smaller at a level, the compressor keeps the original and says so. For a much smaller picture that keeps its transparency, convert the PNG to WebP with the File converter.
Keep your cover art's original for your distributor, which usually wants 3000 by 3000 pixels or more. Compress the copies you put on your website, in a press kit or in an email.
How do I make a WAV file smaller?
Drop it on the compressor: songs become MP3s at 128 kbps (Smallest), 192 kbps (Balanced) or 256 kbps (Best quality). A three-minute WAV of about 30 MB becomes 3 to 6 MB, small enough to email a demo. To pick the exact bitrate, or to keep the audio lossless but smaller as FLAC, use the File converter.
Send your distributor the WAV, never a compressed copy: streaming services encode from your file, and a file that was already compressed gets compressed twice.
Which level should I pick?
| What it's for | Level |
|---|---|
| Email, WhatsApp, a quick preview | Smallest |
| Instagram, TikTok, your website, a press kit | Balanced |
| Keeping a smaller copy you can still edit | Best quality |
Why compress in the browser?
An online compressor that uploads your video makes you wait for the upload before it even starts, and leaves your unreleased music video on someone else's server. The File compressor uses the encoders in your browser and computer, so the file never leaves it and a big video is often done before an upload would have finished.
