How to build an email list of fans as an independent musician
To build a fan email list, give people one clear reason to sign up (an early listen, a pre-save, a presale code or a demo nobody else hears), put the signup where fans already find you (your link in bio, your release links, a QR code at your shows), ask for clear consent to email them, and keep the list in a tool you can export from. Then email when you have something real to say: a release, a show, a first listen.
An email list is the one audience no platform can take away. A follower count depends on an algorithm; an email reaches the inbox.
1. Give one reason to sign up
"Join my newsletter" is not a reason. These are:
- Hear it first: the new single a few days early, or a demo.
- Save it on release day: a pre-save that adds the song to their library when it comes out.
- Get in first: a presale code before tickets go on general sale.
- Something nobody else gets: a stem, a voice memo, a behind-the-scenes video.
2. Put the signup where fans already are
- Your link in bio on Instagram, TikTok and YouTube.
- Every release link and pre-save page.
- Your shows: a QR code on the screen or the merch table, and say it from the stage.
- Your website, above the fold, not in the footer.
3. Ask for consent and keep it clean
Collect the email with a clear line about what people will get. In the EU and the UK, marketing email needs consent, and every email needs a working unsubscribe link wherever you send from. Never add people from your personal contacts or a bought list: it hurts your delivery for everyone else on the list.
4. Email when there is news
You don't need a weekly newsletter. A few emails around each release (the announcement, the pre-save, release day, a thank you) and one per tour is plenty. Keep each one short, with one link. Watch opens and clicks, and read the replies: fans who write back are your core audience.
5. Own the list
Keep the list somewhere you can export it as a CSV. If you change tools, the list comes with you.
Build it with Aden
On Aden, fans subscribe once on your fans page at aden.space/@yourname/fans and become lifetime fans: they connect Spotify, every release you put out is saved to their library on release day, and they can get an email when it lands. You see each fan's email and the date they joined, and you can export the list as a CSV. Lifetime fans is on the Pro plan and up, see pricing.
Bring in the contacts you already have from a CSV, then write email or SMS campaigns from templates for a single, an album, a pre-save, a first listen or live dates. Send now or schedule them, see opens and clicks per person, and read the replies on the campaign itself. Create your Aden account and share your fans page with your next release.
FAQ
How do musicians get fans to join an email list?
They offer something in return for the email, such as an early listen, a pre-save, a presale code or an exclusive demo, and put the signup on their link in bio, their release links and at their shows.
How often should a musician email fans?
When there is real news: a few emails around each release and one per tour is enough for most artists. Every email should have one clear thing to do.
Do I need consent to email my fans?
In the EU and the UK, yes: marketing email needs the person's consent, and every email needs an unsubscribe link. Elsewhere it is still the way to keep your emails out of spam folders.
What is a pre-save?
A pre-save lets a fan add a song to their library before it comes out, so it is there on release day. Collecting the fan's email at the same time is one of the easiest ways to grow a list around a release.
