PhotoCraft: a free Photoshop alternative for musicians
PhotoCraft is ArtCraft's free, open-source image editor, built to feel like Photoshop: it calls itself "the image editor you already know how to use". It runs on macOS, Windows and Linux, and as a web build. For a musician it covers the images every release needs: the cover, the banners, the press photos and the visuals for every post.
What musicians make with PhotoCraft
- Cover art for singles, EPs and albums.
- Press photos, retouched, cropped and color-matched.
- Banners for Spotify, YouTube, SoundCloud and your website.
- Social visuals: the announcement, the tour dates, the story for release day.
- Thumbnails for music videos and visualizers.
Cover art that passes distribution
Distributors generally ask for a square image of 3000 x 3000 pixels in RGB, as a JPG or PNG, without web addresses, social handles or blurry text on it. Start your canvas at that size, keep the title readable at thumbnail size, and save the layered master file next to the export. The next edit (a deluxe version, a remix cover) starts from the real file, not a flattened copy.
Keep your covers in Aden
- On the track. Upload the cover to the track's Covers and the layered master to its Media, so the artwork lives with the song.
- Review drafts with your designer. Every gallery is a review room. Your designer uploads a draft, you comment on it and mark it approved or ask for changes, all on the track.
- Carry it to your socials. After a new profile picture or banner, Aden offers to take it to your socials: one row per platform, each opening the page where that platform changes it.
- Hand it to press. Your Brand & Press Kit page (
aden.space/@yourname/epk) shows your profile picture, banner, logos and colors, so promoters and journalists always use the right files.
You don't need an editor for every visual, either. The free Snippet video maker turns your cover and song into a 10-second vertical video, and the Aden phone app shares a track as a branded 9:16 story image.

FAQ
Is PhotoCraft free?
Yes. PhotoCraft is open source and free to use on macOS, Windows and Linux.
Can I make album cover art with PhotoCraft?
Yes. Start a 3000 x 3000 pixel canvas in RGB, design the cover, and export a JPG or PNG for your distributor.
Is PhotoCraft ready for professional work?
It's an early version that improves quickly. Keep your originals and try it on a real cover before you switch for good.
Where should I store my cover art?
On the track it belongs to. In Aden, the cover sits in the track's Covers, the source files in its Media, and every draft can be reviewed and approved there.
